Arrow star David Ramsey, who portrays the Arrowverse hero John Diggle, gives fans a closer look at the Green Lantern moment from the series finale. One of the biggest fan theories throughout the eight-year run of the Green Arrow-centered series was Diggle’s potential evolution into the Emerald Knight. With Diggle having similarities to John Stewart, one of DC’s iconic Lanterns, Arrow toyed with the idea of embracing the idea. Despite The CW’s consistently growing DC TV universe not having full access to the Green Lantern Corps, teases have been made along the way. It started with Diggle’s similarities to Stewart in the Elseworlds crossover essentially confirming that he is a full-fledged Green Lantern in another universe.
Ahead of the eighth and final season of the Stephen Amell-led drama, Ramsey teased eager viewers that some payoff would happen when it pertains to Green Lantern. Following Crisis on Infinite Earths, Ramsey and producers promised that the Arrow series finale would reward long-time fans. The 10th and final installment of the season concluded Oliver Queen’s story while basically setting up Diggle’s next potential adventure. In the character’s final scene in the series finale, something falls and crashes from the sky, knocking Diggle back into his moving van. As Diggle approached what appeared to be a space ship, he picks up and opens a box that has a strong green light glowing inside. Despite never seeing what’s inside properly, it was meant to be believed it was a Green Lantern ring.
Almost four months after Arrow’s conclusion, Ramsey revealed on his Instagram a behind-the-scenes image from the cliffhanger. While still not having a ring inside, Ramsey’s image does unveil the prop that was used and how the green light effect was properly executed. Following the airing of the series finale, Ramsey and executive producer Marc Guggenheim opened up about whether or not the Green Lantern tease would be continued post-Arrow. According to them, the scene was set up after making a deal with DC Entertainment that had to sign off to let it happen.
With the rest of the Arrowverse shows renewed for next season, Diggle’s future could, theoretically, continue on either one of the six series. Diggle was set to move to Metropolis with his family as he was ready to leave Star City behind following Oliver’s passing. Since Superman & Lois is debuting next season, Diggle living in the same city as Lois and Clark becomes a solid way for Spartan to appear regularly. Given the role that Diggle has been given to the rest of the Arrowverse, it does seem unlikely that producers wouldn’t bring him back in some capacity next season.
Given the Arrowverse’s current state being affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it might take longer for fans to find out what Diggle’s future will look like next season. With upfronts canceled as well as San Diego Comic-Con, there won’t be a lot of opportunities to get new intel on what to look forward to when the Arrowverse shows debut their new seasons. But hopefully, Arrow fans will see Diggle re-emerge next fall in a way that includes the Green Lantern mythology in some capacity.
