Entrevistamos a las estrellas de Jingle Jangle Keegan-Michael Key y Ricky Martin sobre su enfoque para interpretar a sus personajes y mucho más.
Jingle Jangle: Un viaje de Navidad cuenta la historia de un inventor que pierde su creación pero se reencuentra con su familia. El elenco casi completamente negro incluye a grandes como Forest Whitaker y Anika Noni Rose como miembros de la familia central, pero también hay algunos malos increíbles en la mezcla.
Keegan-Michael Key interpreta a Gustafson, el traidor que se escapa con el robot especial de Jeronicus, y Ricky Martin interpreta a su mano derecha Don Juan Diego. Los actores hablaron con Screen Rant sobre lo que aportaron a sus papeles y lo divertido que se divirtieron trabajando en la película.
Keegan, tu número musical es brillante. ¿Qué tan divertido fue eso y cuánto trabajo fue eso?
Keegan-Michael Key: En primer lugar, fue una maravilla. Se trata de un mes a dos meses de trabajo con la coreografía, pero fue realmente satisfactorio. Y es que, en las películas, no se suele practicar. Si vas a hacer la preparación, tienes que hacerlo todo antes de comenzar el rodaje. Y aquí, pudimos prepararnos mientras filmaban y mientras estaban haciendo la preproducción, y fue genial. Fué realmente bueno.
Tuve la oportunidad de decir, “Está bien, creo que realmente acerté ese paso”, y tuve un mes antes de eso para aprender la canción. Entonces, una vez que nos pusimos nuestras mejores galas y nuestros disfraces, y estuvimos en el set, nos llevó unos cuatro días filmar. No me he divertido tanto [before; I felt so present when I was doing it, and it was really a lot of fun. I mean, you lose three pounds every day. Because there’s no better time to dance than when you’re wearing six layers of wool. So, it was really fun.
Ricky, amazing job. Don Juan Diego is mighty full of himself, and I love the character. What inspired his personality and his voice?
Ricky Martin: So, for a minute, we were deciphering if he was Castilian or if he was Colombian. You know how it goes with Spanish, and we play a lot with that. But at the end of the day, I just had David, our director, poking me and allowing me to be; just pushing me to fly as much as I could with it.
I was lucky enough to work and record my parts with Keegan already recorded, so I was able to see his acting in order for me to bring it up to the next level. But it was a lot of fun. A lot of work; I’m not gonna say it was easy. It was many months, on and off, to take it to where it’s at. But I’m very pleased. I watch it, and I want to watch it again. My kids are loving it, my mother is loving it, everybody is. It’s super cool, man.
Keegan, what did you want to bring to your character that wasn’t necessarily on the page?
Keegan-Michael Key: The biggest thing for me was about there being some pathos. I wanted people to see him, and I talked to David, the director, quite a bit during the writing the final stages of the writing process. I wanted to bring this to him, and I’m really inspired by Michael B. Jordan’s performance as Killmonger in Black Panther, because he’s a three-dimensional character. And I wanted to make Gustafson as three-dimensional as possible, so that at any point in the film, you the viewer would understand what his motivations were and where he was coming from.
That’s what I was trying to bring, and I tried to bring it to fruition as best I could at the very end of the movie. You saw at the very end of movie, that sense of him being a tortured soul who in some way, shape or form knew he was stuck. And it’s not until the end – he feels a lot of regret, but Jeronicus also frees him a little bit by going, “Listen, you made a mistake. I would have been there for you the whole time,” you know?
So, I wanted to bring that pathos to it, more than just having him be a one-dimensional villain.
Ricky, eres la última persona que supongo que sería el diablo en el hombro de alguien, pero eso es exactamente lo que es Don Juan. ¿Puedes hablarme sobre quién es el verdadero villano y por qué quiere convencer a Gustafson de ir en esta dirección de tomar prestados planes indefinidamente?
Ricky Martin: ¿Quién va a hacer millones de Don Juans? Soy único. Soy el único y haré lo que sea necesario para seguir siendo único.
Escucha, acabo de entrar allí, y está muy bien escrito, para ser honesto. Simplemente súbete a esa ola y todo estará allí. Si de repente surge algo extra que le gusta a David, lo agrega. Pero me sentí muy cómodo con lo que estaba viendo y con el apoyo que recibía para todos los que me rodeaban.
Para ser honesto, he hecho esto antes, pero no de esta manera. Y me siento muy humilde y agradecido por todo lo que experimenté en este proceso.
Este es un clásico del instinto. ¿Qué crees que separa este cuento de Navidad de otros que hemos visto antes?
Keegan-Michael Key: Yo diría que definitivamente es la magia; este aspecto mágico de este cuento y el hecho de que es casi como una película navideña de ciencia ficción victoriana. Es casi como si Charles Dickens tuviera una pistola láser; tiene ese tipo de [feeling] – que no he visto. Quiero decir, ves magia navideña en las películas, pero esto tiene una magia literal. Y creo que esa es una de las cosas que lo distingue.
