Facebook is introducing a new feature to give users peace of mind around how their profile photo can be used and accessed by others.
The social network today announced a pilot program in India that is designed to protect users who are concerned about other people gaining access to their profile image. The new ‘photo guard’ feature has a range of safety measures that include:
Preventing other users from downloading a person’s profile pic, or sharing it with others
Preventing other users from tagging other people in a person’s profile pic
Preventing other users from taking screenshots of a person’s profile pic — although this is initially for the Android app only
When activated, the optional guard is visible through a blue border and shield around a user’s profile pic. The company partnered with an Indian illustrator to make these safety controls more compelling with attractively designed options.
The new feature is driven by research that the company undertook in India. In a blog post, Facebook explained that it found that “some women choose not to share profile pictures that include their faces anywhere on the internet because they’re concerned about what may happen to their photos.”
It believes this solution may go some way to helping, and it said that early tests indicate that people are 75 percent less likely to copy a photo when the guard option is enabled.
This rollout is initially happening in India, but Facebook said it hopes to expand it to other countries “soon.”

I\u2019ve been thinking a lot about silos, or the lack thereof, within startupland. There\u2019s sometimes an artificial wall that is put up between companies at different stages of growth, when in reality, everyone is in the same room, clinking glasses and tripping over the same rug.\n
Let me be more precise. As the late-stage market has cooled down for tech companies, many early-stage investors say their portfolio companies aren\u2019t too impacted because they\u2019re years away from an exit and have enough capital to weather uncertainty. The same energy was on display this week at TechCrunch Early Stage. Stellation Capital\u2019s Peter Boyce II coyly told me that, based on the term sheet he wrote yesterday, we\u2019re still definitely in a founder-friendly market, while a pair of entrepreneurs not-so-subtly reminded me that experimental bets are still landing significant funding rounds. \n
I believe in optimism, and think of this time in early-stage startups as a recorrection, not a reckoning. But, new PitchBook and NVCA data does show that dollars are changing across the board.\n

Rae Witte dug into the story of Kindbody, a fertility startup that has raised $154.7 million in known venture capital to date with a revolutionary take: it\u2019s important to make patients feel heard, and comfortable.\n
Here\u2019s why it\u2019s important: We know that “holistic health” is the term du jour for digital health companies, so there\u2019s natural questions around if Kindbody\u2019s take on fertility support is actually impactful. This, from one of the stories, gives me hope:\n
Fertility patients have diverse needs, and their experience on the portal reflects that. An LGBTQ+ patient won\u2019t be asked the same questions or be given the same information as a heterosexual couple because their fertility journey is biologically different. When patients sign up, they include how they identify and the services they\u2019re leveraging. This personalization continues throughout patients\u2019 journeys, both during visits and through the portal.\n

Elon Musk made news, yet again, this week with his fixation on Twitter. This time the billionaire offered to buy Twitter, which sent share prices soaring and TechCrunch digging into the history of hostile takeovers. Put simply, a hostile takeover happens when a company or person tries to take over another company against the wishes of the company\u2019s management. It\u2019s spicy.\n
Here\u2019s why it\u2019s important: I mean, for anyone who is following the Twitter and Musk saga, it\u2019s important to understand how realistic it is for a takeover to actually happen. As Kyle Wiggers taught me in his piece, these takeovers are usually doomed in some way, thanks to poison pills, and power balances.\n

Perhaps no commentary has been more humorous than Marc Andreessen’s recent barrage of tweets on the matter, inclusive of visual and written memes. It appears that Andreessen has decided that Twitter is too censorious, and that if Musk bought the company, it would become a land of freer speech.\n
That’s a concept.\n
We don’t have time to wade through all of Andreessen’s elliptical political meanderings. Perhaps another time. A sample of the more plainly worded missives:\n
There does seem to be a sort of collection of venture players congregating in Florida with a certain philosophical bent that’s worth examining. What I am starting to view as the Thiel-Musk-Andreessen viewpoint is somewhat simple: Anything that impedes the ability of a select group of billionaires to do whatever they want is tyranny.\n
This means that Twitter — which has a long history of making mistakes but is working toward a platform that is at once pretty open and not so toxic as to become unusable — is in their sights. How free Twitter is or isn’t in your view will depend somewhat on your priors; mostly I think that the service has done a pretty good job balancing things out over time.\n
So, whither the criticism? I figured I would take a look. Some notes from the field:\n\nSubstack, backed by Andreessen’s venture capital firm, has a somewhat strict set of content guidelines — things that you are not allowed to say or publish on its service. Most of it is pretty standard. No inciting hate against protected classes? Reasonable. A blanket ban on porn? That’s far more censorious than Twitter, frankly. You can post all the visual smut you want on Twitter.com, to pick an example.\nRumble, backed by Thiel, has an extensive set of content notes as well. Indeed, the right-wing favored, soon-to-go-public-via-SPAC service says that its users “may not post or transmit any message which is abusive, inciting violence, harassing, harmful, hateful, anti-semitic, racist or threatening.” I mean, that’s pretty broad and cuts against the view that free speech is something that you cannot enjoy on Twitter!\nFacebook is the final piece of data for this chat. Marc Andreessen is on Facebook’s board. And while Facebook’s terms are myriad, its views on speech are somewhat constrained — show a nipple on Instagram and watch what happens — and yet Andreessen has been content to cash Facebook checks since time immemorial.\n\n
How can the Miami venture cohort find such annoyance with Twitter when they are backing or helping run services with similar or stricter terms of service? Apart from the fact that they may not give a shit about being hypocritical, I think instead they are merely worried about something that they want to say becoming censored.\n
Musk tweets incessantly, and to apparently no censorship. (Is this all about bringing Trump back to Twitter? Recall that the former president is also banned from Facebook, where Andreessen currently works part time.)\n
Part of me wants Musk to buy Twitter so that he can struggle to handle the complex social dynamics of moderating content. It’s not easy or simple. And it’s not something you can get right all of the time — all you can hope for is a balance of open conversation and the minimum regulations needed to keep the commons clear of most forms of abuse. This means that you can’t threaten to kill people on Twitter, but you can TERF it up all you’d like.\n
I don’t think that what the collection of mega-wealthy techies wants really free speech. I think, instead, they want to be able to express their views without any public pushback. I am reading between the lines, but after tracking the folks in question through myriad news cycles and reading their missives, I keep wondering if free speech to them simply means not being forced to absorb feedback about their provincial ideas.\n
None of the folks in question need any more money. And they also don’t lack conviction in their beliefs. So why not just say all the things? That would be using their own right to free speech — the government can’t say a damn thing about their perspectives, so pop off, yeah? See what happens. I doubt their views would get them booted off Twitter. They might engender some disgust from folks who disagree, but, well, so what?\u00a0\n

Co-founder and CTO Jesse Levinson will introduce the Zoox robotaxi for its first IRL public appearance on our main stage. The debut, which will include an interview with Levinson, will finally give the audience an up close view at what the company built \u2014 and maybe reveal what its future holds.\n
Zoox has been working since 2014 to develop a self-driving system, fleet management software, on-demand ride-hailing app as well as a vehicle in an aim to launch a commercial robotaxi service.\n
The company, which was acquired by Amazon two years ago, has released videos showing the cube-shaped, four-seater, sensor-laden vehicle in action. Now, it\u2019s time to see it in person.\n
We\u2019ll also sit down with Levinson to get an update on the company, a progress report on how production of the Zoox robotaxi is scaling, where it might be testing next and his insights on the industry.\n
In his role at Zoox, Levinson is responsible for overseeing the company\u2019s software, artificial intelligence, computing and sensing platforms. Prior to Zoox, Levinson graduated summa cum laude from Princeton and then completed a computer science Ph.D. and postdoc under Sebastian Thrun at Stanford.\n
While at Stanford, he developed algorithms for the university’s $1 million-winning entry in the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge, and he went on to lead the self-driving car team\u2019s research efforts. Levinson also co-created Pro HDR, a popular mobile photography app purchased by more than a million people.

Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine has been going on for almost two months, and during this time, all sectors of the economy, including IT, have had to stand by the military.\n
Ukrainian IT did not break down \u2014 it shrank a little, but it is standing firmly, providing employment to people, paying taxes, organizing humanitarian help and assisting the Ukrainian army.\n
Here are a few key factors that have helped Ukrainian IT, and us as a company, survive:\nCompanies prepared for war before it started\n
The media was discussing the possibility of war long before it actually started. Even though everyone hoped for the better, Ukrainians acknowledged that they had a neighbor who could attack at any moment. With this in mind, many IT companies started to plan for emergencies and set up contingency teams. Preparation significantly helped us maintain cohesion when the war started on February 24.\n
Our company created an emergency team, whose main responsibilities were to ensure the accommodation and transportation of our employees from dangerous zones.\nThe COVID-19 pandemic forced companies to shift to digital\n
The ability to work remotely considerably helped IT specialists in wartime. People worked in bomb shelters, in basements, and in cars and trains during evacuations. We were used to working online, so when the war began, it was not a big problem for our employees.\n
Thanks to the availability of numerous digital tools and programs, our workflow was not heavily disrupted.\n

It is difficult to leave your country and quickly integrate into life elsewhere, so staying in safe parts of Ukraine was very important for many people. Several million Ukrainians relocated from the east to the western parts of the country, concentrating in cities like Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Lutsk, Rivne and Uzhhorod.\n
IT companies did their best to help their employees relocate. Some covered the cost of moving, while others rented accommodations. The biggest businesses even opened 24-hour hotlines to help with evacuation procedures and psychological assistance.\n
In the first weeks of war, we helped employees from the east to relocate, rented a hostel in Lviv and invited people to live there with their families. We also transformed part of the office into temporary accommodations and helped employees find and rent flats, which wasn’t easy due to the huge increase in demand for housing in Western Ukraine once the war began.\nEvacuation of employees to other countries\n
Some people decided to temporarily leave the country until the situation improved and go to countries where they could feel safe. Only women, children and retired people could do this and all men aged 18 to 60 stayed back in Ukraine. The war is still raging, but many people who had left Ukraine are coming back now.\n
Some IT companies relocated their offices to the neighboring countries, mainly Poland, Romania and Hungary. Others helped their employees’ families with relocation, bureaucratic procedures and accommodation.\n
Only some of our employees left Ukraine. Our emergency plan included accommodation for employees and their families in Slovakia, but in the end, everybody decided to stay back, and we did not have use it.\nSupport and trust of foreign partners and clients\n
Despite the risks and the vulnerability, many foreign customers continued their projects in our country. This trust and support is extremely important for Ukraine\u2019s IT sector, since it helps businesses survive.\n
However, the level of productivity at companies did not decline. People feel extremely motivated to work and demonstrate good performance to foreign clients. Many employees who lived in the safer parts of the country went over and above, covering for and supporting their colleagues who were relocating from the war zones.\n
Overall, the Ukrainian IT sector managed to ensure secure and uninterrupted project delivery.\n

Many IT companies in the safer parts of the country have transformed part of their offices to accommodate employees and their families from other regions. Many offices were temporarily turned into humanitarian centers, which provided people support and assistance in the initial weeks of war.\n
Our own office today serves three functions. It serves as\u00a0temporary accommodation for employees from war-afflicted areas, as office space for companies that relocated from war-torn regions and, finally, as office space for our own employees.\nProtection of the Ukrainian army\n
Thanks to the immense efforts of the Ukrainian army, many cities are now safe and allow people to live and work relatively calmly. Many IT specialists signed up to protect their land. People who were coding, managing and working on complex technology before the war put down their laptops and picked up weapons.\n
Other IT specialists remained to maintain the IT front, which is no less important. IT companies are actively involved in volunteering at the corporate level to organize funds and initiatives to help the army financially.\n
Our CRO and co-founder, Igor Luzhanskiy, joined the Territorial Defen\u0441e Forces at the beginning of the war. His battalion is protecting our land and ensuring public safety.\u00a0\u00a0We try to constantly support him and his battalion with technical and material means.\n

The motivation to help one’s own country can do miracles. IT companies have been working on volunteering projects from the first days of the war.\n

Some develop apps for the military while others develop solutions for civilians. Today, there are hundreds of different initiatives, and their existence shows the unity of business for a common purpose \u2014 the victory of Ukraine. IT companies have acknowledged the complexity of operating in conditions of war, which has led to many businesses uniting and helping each other.\n
In less than a month after the war began of war, we have made five fully operational social, humanitarian and medical chatbots, as well as an informational website that explains the war in Ukraine to the international community.\n
Our co-founder and strategy board member, Andriy Sabanskiy, has united professionals and companies from Ukraine and the U.S. to work with local, national, governmental and international professional medical organizations to provide information and training to the military.\n
More than a thousand military professionals have already passed the training. The app, TacticMedAid, was downloaded by more than 43,000 users on the iOS\/Android stores. Our Telegram chatbot of the same name is actively used by the military and civil population to learn about tactical medicine.\nWhat\u2019s next?\n
It is believed that demand for IT will remain high, and the IT sector itself may become the new driver of the economy. The situation depends entirely on how long this war will last and how it will end. Despite the level of support for Ukraine, businesses are very reluctant to take risks and function in unpredictable conditions.\nHow can you help?\n

Facebook is introducing a new feature to give users peace of mind around how their profile photo can be used and accessed by others.\n
When activated, the optional guard is visible through a blue border and shield around a user’s profile pic. The company partnered with an Indian illustrator to make these safety controls more compelling with attractively designed options.\n

The new feature is driven by research that the company undertook in India. In a blog post,\u00a0Facebook explained that it found that “some women choose not to share profile pictures that include their faces anywhere on the internet because they\u2019re concerned about what may happen to their photos.”\n
It believes this solution may go some way to helping, and it said that early tests indicate that people are 75 percent less likely to copy a photo when the guard option is enabled.\n
