El asesor de Amnistía Internacional Australia sobre personas refugiadas, Graham Thom, aseguró que el caso del serbio Novak Djokovic, retenido en un hotel del Melbourne a su llegada al país oceánico tras cancelarse su visado, pone de relieve las “vergonzosas políticas” de Australia sobre refugiados.

“Djokovic ha vislumbrado por un instante lo que las personas refugiadas llevan años experimentando debido a las vergonzosas políticas del gobierno australiano sobre las personas refugiadas.
Por ejemplo, Mehdi Ali, iraní de 24 años recluido en el mismo hotel que Djokovic, Park Hotel, contó a Amnistía Australia: ‘la cárcel y la miseria que se respiran en mi habitación llevan acechándome casi nueve años’“, explicó Thom.

Sin embargo, considera que el caso del número uno del mundo ha puesto “el foco” en “esta situación terrible”. “Supone una violación del derecho internacional y ha causado sufrimiento y muerte a personas cuyo único ‘delito’ era buscar seguridad en las costas australianas“, afirmó.

“Las personas atrapadas indefinidamente en este sistema brutal, ya sea en los llamados ‘lugares de detención alternativos’ (APOD) dentro de nuestras fronteras o en Nauru, están sufriendo (…) Y muchas sufren traumas y enfermedades a diario debido a su reclusión“, apuntó.

“Estas personas han huido de algunos de los lugares más peligrosos del mundo y tienen derecho a la libertad, la seguridad y un futuro prometedor para ellas y sus familias. Entre ellas hay médicos, músicos, ejecutivos comerciales, trabajadores sociales y atletas. Necesitan nuestra ayuda urgente. La población australiana no puede permanecer impasible mientras la clase política mira hacia otro lado ante el sufrimiento de la gente”, continuó.

Por ello, Thom destaca que “hay más opciones”. “Amnistía Internacional dedica esfuerzos a llevar gente a Suiza o Canadá y a apoyar su reasentamiento en Estados Unidos. Nueva Zelanda lleva cinco años ofreciéndose a acoger 150 personas refugiadas al año. Pedimos al primer ministro australiano, Scott Morrison, que ponga fin a este sistema injusto, acepte el ofrecimiento de Nueva Zelanda y permita que estas personas empiecen al fin a rehacer sus vidas”, señaló.

Según destaca Amnistía Internacional, el gobierno australiano lleva desde 2012 enviando a solicitantes de asilo en barco a instalaciones de Papúa Nueva Guinea y Nauru. Alrededor de 40 personas continúan recluidas en los APOD, denominados Park Hotel, hoteles y moteles que el gobierno australiano utiliza en lugar de grandes centros para alojar a personas migrantes detenidas.
